Airbag light on after an accident: what it means

After a crash, the airbag module saves the crash data and keeps the light on, even after the body work is done. Here is what that means and how it is fixed safely.

Why the airbag light stays on after a crash

The airbag light is the car telling you the supplemental restraint system (SRS) has a fault. After a collision, the airbag control module saves crash data and sets a hard fault that does not clear by itself. That is why the airbag light can stay on even when the car looks perfect again after the body shop.

A crash where only the seat-belt pretensioners fired, or even one where nothing deployed, can also leave data in the module. Fixing the bumper, the doors or the dash does not reset that memory. The module has to be read, and the whole system has to be brought back to working order.

What the light means for your safety

When the airbag light is on, the system may not work in the next crash. Depending on the fault, some airbags or pretensioners may not deploy at all. Treat the light as a real warning: get it diagnosed soon, and don't assume you and your passengers are protected while it stays on.

Don't try to work on airbag parts yourself. Airbags and pretensioners hold small explosive charges and can fire if they are handled or wired the wrong way. Leave the connectors and modules alone and let someone who does SRS work diagnose the system.

Deployed parts must be replaced first

Any airbag that opened and any seat-belt pretensioner that fired is used up. It has to be replaced with a correct part before the module is reset, or the system will still have a fault, or worse, a hidden one. Crash sensors, the clock spring behind the steering wheel and damaged wiring may need attention too.

  • Airbags that deployed
  • Seat-belt pretensioners that fired
  • Damaged crash sensors
  • A damaged clock spring or wiring
  • The module itself, if it can't be reset

Reset, repair or replace the module

Once the deployed parts are replaced, the airbag module has three paths. On many cars the module can be reset, which clears the crash data so it works like before. Some modules need repair on the bench. Others should be replaced with a new or used module coded to the car's VIN and options. We tell you which one applies before we start.

Which path makes sense depends on the make, the model and the module. Send us the year, make and model and a photo of the module label or the warning light, and we answer by text with what your car needs and the price for it.

Never just turn the light off

Some people offer to make the airbag light go dark without repairing anything, just so the dash looks normal. That is dangerous: everything looks fine while the system may not protect anyone in a crash. It also hides a real problem from the next driver or owner. We don't do it. Our SRS module reset always ends with a working system.

When the work is done, we clear the faults with the system complete and check that the airbag light behaves the way the maker designed it: on for a few seconds when you start the car, then off. If it stays on, there is still something to fix, and we tell you what.

Questions

Why is my airbag light still on after the body shop fixed my car?

The airbag module keeps the crash data and a hard fault until it is reset or replaced. Body work alone doesn't clear it. The deployed parts are replaced, then the module is reset, repaired or replaced and the whole system is tested.

Is an SRS module reset safe?

It is when the whole system is repaired: deployed airbags and fired pretensioners are replaced first, and the module is reset so it works normally. A reset that only hides the light without fixing the system is not safe, and we don't do it.

Can I drive with the airbag light on?

The car may drive normally, but the airbags or pretensioners may not work in a crash. Get the system diagnosed as soon as you can, and don't assume it will protect you while the light is on.
